The following flight test notes recently . Avoid these common traps! Here are some items to take note of when preparing for flight tests.
Read the flight test guide! Repeat. Read the flight test guide!
Be sure to understand and check the inspection schedule the aircraft. IT IS IN THE LOGBOOK but requires looking back a few pages in the logbook.
Candidates have planned their x-countries at 2500. Why so low? Go up. WAY up. Avioding airspace is not a valid excuss to stay low.
Know thy airspace! Know when and who to talk to.
The GPS is one tool in your basket of tools for navigation. Don’t make it your only tool to navigate.
Don’t use the Winnipeg winds to calcuate a takeoff in Kenora. Or don’t use a METAR wind (surface wind), to plan a cross country at 10,000 feet.
Fuel requirements were calculated to the gallon and nothing extra was taken for a trip. Can you fly a perfectly straight line on the map? Add more fuel if the weather is less then ideal, or if unfamilar with the airplane or route.
Not only read the weather, but read between the lines. Be prepared to answer go/no go. Why? When could we go? Could we go part way?
